A morning on a Tier-2 stamping floor

An invitation from a supplier we'd never worked with, on the condition that we spend the first two hours saying nothing at all.

Aesthon Labs engineers reviewing plant data together.

A Tier-2 stamping supplier invited us to spend a morning on their floor. We'd never worked with them and there was no commercial conversation attached — the arrangement was that we'd spend the first two hours observing and asking nothing, which is a better deal than it sounds.

The shift handover is the real system

The MES is where the data lives, but the shift handover is where the knowledge moves. Twelve minutes, standing, no screen — and almost everything that mattered about the state of the line was transmitted verbally and written down nowhere. The outgoing supervisor knew which press was drifting. That fact existed in exactly one head at a time.

“If you want to know what's actually wrong with the line, don't read the report. Stand here at seven in the morning.”

What we took away

A digital twin that models the equipment but not the handover is modelling the easier half of the problem. The interesting question isn't whether an agent can read the press data — it obviously can — but whether it can capture the thing the outgoing supervisor knows and the incoming one doesn't yet.

We're grateful they let us stand there. Most of what we've learned that changed the product came from mornings like this one rather than from anything we built in the office.
